Academic Positions
Advertised from September to January in CACM

The following table presents approximate counts of academic positions advertised in the Communications of the ACM between September and January in each of the past four years. For each entry, the first number gives positions in the United States; the number in parenthesis gives positions outside the U.S. In this table, positions are classifed into three main categories: postdocs, non-tenure-track positions, and tenure-track positions.

Categories of Positions

Numbers of Openings

Some ads indicate a specific number of openings, and these counts are given in the Designated Numbers column of the table. Other ads indicate Multiple Positions, without indicating just how many openings a school is trying to fill. The column Lower Bound Total counts the designated positions and the multiple positions -- counting each multiple position school as having 2 positions. Thus, this lower bound total gives a minimum number of positions. In fact, it seems likely that several schools advertising multiple positions have 3 or more openings, so the lower bound total could be significantly lower than the actual number.

Domestic and Foreign Positions

In the table, main entries are given for positions in the United States. Foreign positions are given in parentheses.

Schools

The final column of the table gives the number of schools advertising in each year and category. As with the other counts, if the same position is advertised in several issues (e.g., in both November and December), then that position is counted only once.

Starting Dates

The CACM ads were analyzed concerning the starting dates of various positions. Due to small numbers, differences in post-doctoral positions and non-tenure-track positions seemed insignificant and are not reported here. The remaining comments are restricted to domestic, junior-level, tenure-track positions, as this is the only category where the numbers exceeded just a few for an starting time other than Fall.
