Goal of education: promote student learning
Key to course success: what students learn
Not particularly important what instructor covers in class
Apparently duplicated effort if instructor repeats material in textbook;
if instructor must repeat textbook, perhaps a new textbook should be used!
Lecturer can only guess what students are really thinking
What topics are clear and need little discussion?
When are clarifications, expansions, examples needed?
What misconceptions might students have?
Common Educational Goal: Prepare for life-long learning
How will students learn how to learn?
Steady format of lecture does not develop habits for learning after school
If lecture is not very effective, why use that pedagogy?
How can one engage students, so focus can be on their learning?
