Motivation
This labbased pedagogy evolved from at least three
independent experiences and observations:

Role of the instructor

Studies on effectiveness of lectures

Local experiments regarding linear algebra at Grinnell College
Role of the Instructor
Goal of education: promote student learning

Key to course success: what students learn

Not particularly important what instructor covers in class

Apparently duplicated effort if instructor repeats material in textbook;
if instructor must repeat textbook, perhaps a new textbook should be used!

Lecturer can only guess what students are really thinking

What topics are clear and need little discussion?

When are clarifications, expansions, examples needed?

What misconceptions might students have?
Basic Question: How can one engage students, so focus can be on their
learning?
