Utilizing Small Groups
Format
Students divided into pairs or small groups
Each group given one or more exercises/challenges
Tasks may be common to all groups
Each group may have a separate assignment
Students work in groups (usually during class) on exercises
Faculty circulate during group sessions to answer questions, provide encouragement, guidance, feedback
Groups may or may not report back to the entire group
Often each group submits a write-up of their solutions
Effectiveness
Students can get guidance as they get started applying concepts
Reinforces concepts, problem solving, assuming strong group interactions
Dangers:
One student in a group may do all the work, while the others relax
Students may divide exercises, so they only complete a subset of the problems
Changing groups regularly (e.g., every week) reduces reliance on the strong students
