Monday, July 13

Faculty discuss their use of Web technologies and what they hope to achieve this week
9:15-9:45 Basics of HTML (Sam)
9:45-10:00 Break
10:00-11:00 How to design a course Web page
11:00-noon Break into PC & Mac group:

Assignment for Tuesday

Create a basic web page for a course (could just transfer an existing course syllabus).

Tuesday, July 14

9:00-9:45 Participant demonstrations
Faculty demonstrate the pages they created and discuss problems
9:45-10:00 Break
10:00-11:00 Additional demonstrations
Faculty (Jared Gardner, Sam) demonstrate course Web pages with discussion of how they have used Web pages in classes and a few design recommendations.
11:00-11:30 Discuss issues pertaining to the use of course Web pages
11:30-noon Show some good Web pages from other schools (e.g., World Lecture Hall)

Assignment for Wednesday

Make at least two hot links on web page, one for email and one to another site (e.g., Grinnell College home page or departmental home page).

Wednesday, July 14

How to do it. Issues involved, especially regarding copyright (Bill, Catherine).

How to do it. Ethical concerns regarding student work. Discussion (Sam and Bill)

11:15-noon — Technologies for class discussion (Bill)
Current Listserv possibilities. Future possibilities with Internet Information Server

Assignments for Thursday

Using the World Wide Web: find sites of interest regarding classroom use of different technologies (course readings, assignments, etc.).

Optional assignment: experiment with advanced technologies (discussion groups, annotations, WebCT, etc.).

Discussion of Web search engines and directories. Some tips for using search engines (David)
11:00-11:45 Evaluating sites.
How did faculty evaluate their sites? What can we do to teach students to use critical evaluation skills when using the Internet?
11:45-noon Planning
Discuss schedule for Friday: Additional topics for discussion?

Assignment for Friday

Search, find and add relevant WWW sites to course Web page.

Friday

9:00-9:45 Discussion of additional Web searching experiences
9:45-10:00 Break
10:00-10:30 Student issues.
Discussion regarding students and their use of the Internet. How can faculty guide student use of the Internet? How can faculty use a Web page to direct students? What do the faculty want students to be able to do?
10:30-11:00 Staff issues.
Discussion regarding roles of faculty secretaries and instructional technology/multimedia specialists with regard to Web pages.
11:00-11:30 Campus issues.
What should the campus be doing regarding the World Wide Web for classes, for departments, for individual faculty?
11:30-noon Other technologies (such as Adobe) and the future of the World-Wide Web. (Sam and Bill)

Final Assignment

Write report for Helen Scott.
