Miscellaneous Assignment 14: Cover for Course Anthology

Summary: In this exercise, you will create a potential cover for an anthology of work from this Tutorial, tentatively titled Owning the Intangible. (You may choose to do either this assignment or Writing Assignment 8, in which you write an introduction the same anthology.)

Purposes: To give you the opportunity to reflect on the topics we have covered in the class. To give you an opportunity to use a different set of skills in reflecting on that material.

Due: 8:00 a.m., Thursday, 2 December 2010

Turning it in:

• Bring a printed copy of the cover to class.
• Email me a digital version of the cover.

Background: Each member of this Tutorial has selected a particular issue or topic that relates to the resolution of conflict in online communities. You have now had the opportunity to read drafts of the essays and to see them presented. You will soon receive final versions of the essays.

We are now ready to organize the essays into a book. Turning the essays into a book means that we need to think about common themes, a title, and how to represent the book to others.

The Assignment: Design a cover for an anthology of the work from the course. The cover should include the title (which you may choose) and appropriate images. Your cover should demonstrate understanding and analysis of the work of your colleagues, such as the identification of common themes.

You should also write a short designer's note to accompany the cover that explains how you feel this cover appropriately represents the work we have done this semester.

Choosing the Best: I will distribute both covers and introductions electronically and anonymously. We will all read these anonymous introductions and covers and rank them. The ones that are ranked the best will be used for an anthology I hope to make from the work. (The author of the introduction and the designer of the cover will receive some special bonus, although I'm not sure what it is.)
