Overview

Today we consider some issues pertaining to programming style.

Notes

• I have not yet finished evaluating assignment 2. I do have some comments which I will discuss at the beginning of today's class.
• I'll be updating the syllabus in the next few days to reflect the recent changes. It's likely that we'll spend all of this week on chapter 2 and move on to chapter 3 next week.
• I'll be away next Wednesday and Friday (as I had planned at the start of the semester). Do you want a guest lecturer or a break?

• Whenever you write programs for me (and, hopefully, for any purpose), you should strive for the four R's:
  • Your programs should be reliable, behaving correctly and predicatably when given correct inputs.
  • Your programs should be robust, recovering appropriately from errors that occur.
  • Your program code should be readable, easy for others to understand, use, and modify.
  • Large portions of your program should be reusable, designed in a general enough fashion that they can be used elsewhere.
